BENEFITS TO JOINING AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION: - Community service hours are given for completing a service project on a topic you are passionate about, along with working diligently on this National and International Student Council Team. - This is a remote and virtual opportunity, meaning that you can participate from anywhere in the world, from any country or state in the US. In this case, meetings will be held virtually. - If you are in the age range of 14-23, and you are interested in promoting education and literacy, along with subjects like tutoring, and would like to gain valuable leadership skills you can write on applications, resumes, and even on college applications, this may be the perfect opportunity for you! Student Leadership Council’s mission is to promote literacy for children and adults by offering a range of educational support services. Such services include assisting families in the selection of schools, organization of educational activities and acquisition of materials. We promote a healthy learning environment and enrichment programs for families of preschool and school-age children, including children with special needs. Objectives: To recognize talents and strengths in students through four aspects - leadership, community service, networking and scholarship. The Student Leadership Council has two types of memberships available: junior member and senior member. HOW TO APPLY: 1. Please submit the online application form ( to the right that asks for your name and contact information) at this link: https://school.newheightseducation.org/about/nheg-groups/student-leadership-council/ 2. Put together your profile of academic achievements and talents (you can use e-portfolio or online portfolio, as well) such as a resume or list of classes you've taken, activities, and skills. Please include your unofficial transcript, and if unsure of what to include, you can contact newheightseducation@yahoo.com *You can optionally submit an informal letter (from parents/guardians) about your background and history. 3. Submit a letter giving permission to participate (from parents/guardians). This can be as simple as a typed-out pdf of your parent's signature, along with a message saying that (name) is able to participate in the New Heights Education Student Council. 4. You can email these documents to newheightseducation@yahoo.com, and they will be reviewed, and if found eligible, a junior membership will be granted. If you don’t qualify for a membership, you will be informed about additional things you might do to become a member. 5. Please also click the "I want to help" button to confirm your interest on this site. If you have been accepted as a junior member, your next step will be to choose a project . You might want to discuss your choice with the Executive Director for further guidelines. Frequently Asked Questions How often do you meet? It is recommended that you meet at least once every other month. Meetings can be held in-person/online or both. What about a service project? It is suggested that every student finds someone in their chosen profession to mentor them and work with that mentor for at least six months. We will help you find one if needed. A letter from the mentor will be needed that shows time spent and of what the tasks consisted. What are the testing requirements? No standardized tests are required. Parents may send in a letter telling about their student/child’s history, but it doesn’t count towards the three other professional references required. STUDENT REQUIREMENTS The requirements to be accepted as a junior member are: Must be 14-23 years old and in grade 9-12 with minimum 3.0 GPA and for those continuing into college with minimum 3.0 GPA Letter from parents/guardians describing the student’s history (optional) Profile of academic and other talents Submission of completed application.
