Who We Are

Mental Health America of Northeast Indiana (MHANI) is dedicated to helping those living with a mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. Founded in 1954, we have spent the last 65+ years advocating and educating alongside those in our community with mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and disabilities along with fighting stigma and discrimination and raising awareness that recovery is real and possible.

Our mission is to promote the mental and emotional health of our community by offering advocacy, education, support services and hope. We envision a community that embraces individuals with mental health challenges, promotes recovery, and fosters wellness.

What We Do

Mental Health America of Northeast Indiana (MHANI) provides a variety of services through our focused programming. Our programming includes: Guardianship, Peer Support and Advocacy.

Guardianship Services

Professional guardians provide advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities, mental illnesses, dementia, and brain injuries who are unable to advocate for themselves. These services are available in Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wabash, Wells and Whitley Counties.

Volunteer advocates are a great need within the Guardianship program. These advocates are trained and asked to make 1 - year commitments after which they connect 2 - 4 times per month with their assigned senior or person with a disability. These volunteers have flexible schedules. Through these visits the volunteer gets to know their person and provides them with much needed socialization. These volunteers are responsible for providing feedback to guardianship staff on changes or issues with the client. Volunteer advocates do not make any medical decisions.

Education and Advocacy

A wide variety of trainings and workshops related to mental health, substance use and suicide prevention are offered. Trainings for all levels of mental health knowledge are available.

Volunteers in Education and Advocacy would serve as speakers or trainers in specialized trainings and workshops such as Lunch 'N' Learns where subject matter experts outside of our highly trained in-house trainers might be needed.

Mental Health America of Northeast Indiana also provides information and resources related to mental wellness, suicide prevention, substance use, and less restrictive alternatives to adult guardianship.

Mental health America of Northeast Indiana also has short term/ one time volunteer needs working Community Events such as Health Fairs. This may include set up/tear down and includes training to give community members information about our agency.
