Volunteer: Greenway Rangers - Sidepath Trails

Hey, want to be part of something awesome? The City of Fort Wayne Greenways and Trails team is on the lookout for folks to join as Greenway Rangers and help keep our sidepath trails in top shape.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, a sidepath is just a fancy name for a two-way trail that runs right along the road—think bikes, joggers, and dog-walkers all sharing the lane.

Here’s what you’d be doing as a Greenway Ranger:

- Patrol your own little stretch of trail (half a mile to a mile) once a week from April through October. Winter patrols? Totally your call.

- Notice anything weird—like graffiti, fallen branches, or cracks in the path? Give the Program Manager a quick shout.

- Track your patrol hours each month. Nothing tricky, promise.

- Pick up litter, clear away small branches, sweep up debris—just the easy stuff. If it’s something bigger, let the Program Manager know and they’ll handle it.

Featured Sidepath Trail Openings:

     - Homestead Road Trail - Aboite Center Rd to Liberty Mills Rd

       - Pufferbelly Trail - Coliseum Boulevard to Ice Way - NEW - This will include the bridge once it is complete

     - Pufferbelly Trail - Shoaff Rd to Fitch Rd

     - St. Joe Center Road Trail - Wheelock Road to Meijer Drive

     - Hanna Street Trail - Berry Street to Wallace Street - Coming Soon!

This volunteer position is open to anyone 18 years or older. Families or individuals under 18 should contact Rick Zolman at Greenways@CityofFortWayne.org to discuss opportunities.

Volunteer: Young moms in need of mentors

Would you like to help young mothers by sharing your journey through motherhood? Journey Beside Mothers (JBM) is responding to a need in our community to support mothers of children, newborn through preschool-aged, who need the support families have traditionally been able to give. Volunteers will be matched according to the mother’s needs, with a weekly minimum time commitment of 1 hour and up to 4 hours. As a mentor, you will offer support to new moms.

Mentors can assist with caring for the infant or engage with older children while the mom takes care of other responsibilities. A mentor can accompany moms to stores, playgrounds, doctors’ appointments, walks,  run errands, or help with light housework.  A mentor will help the moms grow and cheer them on as they take on this new role. Mentors can become a friend to talk to, someone to help with meal plans, meet for coffee, or even go for a walk in the park!  Building a relationship of support is the primary goal.

There is an initial 1-hour orientation for new volunteers, followed by a monthly 1-hour training for all volunteers.
Not interested in mentoring? Help is also needed on the activity committee, special event committee, preparing food for get-togethers and child care during meetings.

Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)

Make a Difference in a Child’s Life – Become a CASA Volunteer

The Allen County CASA Program recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in the court system. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers get to know the child, gather information, and make recommendations to the court about what is in the child’s best interest.

As a CASA volunteer, you’ll be a consistent and supportive presence for a child navigating the foster care system. You’ll help the child understand what’s happening in their case and ensure their voice is heard among a sea of professionals-lawyers, caseworkers, doctors, and judges.

Your advocacy helps judges make informed decisions so children can be placed in safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible. Beyond court, CASA volunteers often support educational needs, encourage goals, and serve as positive role models. This is more than volunteering, it’s a chance to change a child’s life, and your own.

Volunteer: Food Pantry Volunteer

When someone walks into one of our 12 food pantry locations across Fort Wayne, they're often facing one of the hardest weeks of their life. Your job is simple but powerful: greet them with dignity, help them select nutritious food, and make sure they leave with what they need. You'll stock shelves, pack food boxes, check expiration dates, and keep the pantry organized and welcoming.

The work is physical—lifting up to 25 lbs, standing for extended periods—but it's also deeply relational. This is where food insecurity meets human kindness, and you're the bridge.

We have pantries throughout the city, so there's likely one near you. Volunteers must be 18+ (or accompanied by an adult) and complete a brief orientation. Flexible scheduling available.

Want to help feed your neighbors with respect? Fill out our volunteer interest form to find the pantry closest to you and share your availability.

Volunteer: Carpentry & Skilled Labor Volunteer (Carpenter's Sons Ministry)

The Carpenter's Sons Ministry builds ramps, repairs porches, and makes critical home modifications so elderly and disabled neighbors can safely stay in their homes. Every Tuesday morning, we gather for coffee and fellowship, then head out to worksites across the community. You'll use your carpentry skills—or learn them from experienced volunteers—to solve real problems: a wheelchair ramp that restores independence, a repaired step that prevents a fall, a grab bar that makes bathing safe again.

We welcome everyone from seasoned tradespeople to enthusiastic beginners. If you can measure, cut, lift materials, and follow safety protocols, we'll teach you the rest. Many volunteers come as duos or small teams—it's easier to learn and more fun to build together.

Ready to use your hands to rebuild safety and independence? Complete our volunteer interest form and let us know your skill level and availability.

Volunteer: Share Local Entertainment News - Read and Record Whatzup for People with Reading Challenges

The Audio Reading Service's target audience is listeners of all ages who have visual, physical, learning, or language challenges to reading traditional print.  We broadcast the recorded readings of news and information from over 90 publications. Articles are read aloud and recorded in our studios.

One current opportunity is our Whatzup program!

• Provide listeners with comprehensive entertainment information, including articles, local events, and local music and movie reviews by reading Whatzup. Materials are read from hard copy. This is a weekly commitment for a 90-minute recording session timeslot. We can work with your schedule, Monday-Friday between 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.

We enhance the lives of our listeners!

"One of the best features of your service for my mom is the human voice. She is 94, blind  and lives alone… your readers are her companions."

My mom listens to The Weekend program and often attends events she hears about that are going on in the Fort Wayne area.

"The Audio Reading Service is my contact with the outside world and I am very grateful to you!"

"Your Service is a wonderful thing. It makes such a difference in my husband's quality of life. He read The Atlantic for 50 years and know can hear the podcast. Please thank everyone who makes this possible.”

If your reading skills and passions match our needs, we’d love to have you join our audio reading team of ACPL volunteers! An interview and audition are required.
