Volunteer: Provide Access for People with Reading Challenges: Read and Record Magazines, Newspapers, and More!

The Audio Reading Service's target audience is listeners of all ages who have visual, physical, learning, or language challenges to reading printed materials. 

We broadcast the recorded readings of news and information from over 90 publications! Articles are read and recorded in our studios. An interview and audition are required.

Our current opportunities include:

• What’s going on in Decatur? Or Auburn? Or Columbia City? Find out – along with our listeners – by reading Area News. We have a weekly opening on Fridays, to read and record area community newspapers in our studios. Materials are read from a digital touchscreen tablet and hard copies. This is a weekly commitment for a 90-minute reading timeslot. We can work with your schedule, Fridays between 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.

• Read about the life stories of contemporary and historical people for our listeners on our Biographies and Memoirs program. Books are selected by our manager from the ACPL collection, and read from hard copy. This is a weekly commitment for a 90-minute reading timeslot. We can work with your schedule, Monday-Friday between 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.

• Read Our Lives and Times and guide listeners through exploring past decades of issues, stories, notable people, events, and trends that have shaped our current times. Materials are read from hard copy. This is a weekly or every/other week commitment for a 90-minute reading timeslot. We can work with your schedule, Monday-Friday between 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.  

• Provide listeners with comprehensive entertainment information, including articles, local events, and local music and movie reviews by reading Whatzup. Materials are read from hard copy. This is a weekly commitment for a 90-minute recording session timeslot. We can work with your schedule, Monday-Friday between 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.

 Lea “El Mexicano y Más”. Con el lema “el respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz”, en su periódico y sitio web, El Mexicano cubre noticias locales, nacionales y mundiales, e información para nuestra comunidad hispanohablante. El contenido es leído en tableta. Requisitos adicionales: Un compromiso semanal de una hora, Lunes - Viernes. Nosotros nos ajustaremos a su horario; leer y hablar tanto español como inglés fluidamente.

With its newspaper and web presence motto of “The Respect of the Rights of Others is Peace,” El Mexicano covers local, national and world news and information for our Spanish speaking community. Content is read from a digital touchscreen tablet. Additional requirements: A weekly, one-hour commitment, Monday - Friday. We will work with your schedule. For this position, individuals must be fluent in reading and speaking both English and Spanish.
