Volunteer Opportunities From: Volunteer Center

Volunteer: Make-A-Wish Cheers for Wishes

We are looking for volunteers at our Cheers for Wishes event. At Cheers for Wishes, you'll hear inspiring wish stories and help bring hope, strength, and joy to kids through the power of the wish. Our team needs volunteers to assist with light setup, registration, accepting donations, and light cleanup.

Parking: The most convenient parking can be found in the free lot directly west of The Pearl Event Center and the paid STAR Financial Bank parking garage off of Maiden Lane. Both the venue and the garage are new construction so they may not be accurately represented on your map street view. Our staff has always parked at the free lot next to The Pearl and never had an issue with space availability.

Volunteer: Therapy Pet's Needed

At Heart to Heart Hospice, we know there are different ways to
show care for our terminally ill patients, and sometimes we are
able to involve a very special pet. Pets, through animal-assisted
therapy, provide faithful companionship, comfort and affection.

How can they interact with hospice patients?

•Sitting quietly near a patient, so the patient can enjoy their presence
•Playing fetch with a patient, going after a ball or toy
•Being talked to, petted, or held, per patient preference
•Enjoying performing tricks, such as 'roll over' 'sit' or 'shaking hands'

There are proven benefits to hospice pet therapy for those at
the end-of-life. Benefits can include:

•Reducing blood pressure
•Helping reduce physical pain
•Providing calm, with a relaxing and understanding presence
•Promoting improved heart rate and cardiovascular health
•Increasing overall comfort
•Helping facilitate range of motion and strength
•Reducing feelings of loneliness, depression, agitation, and anxiety

*Must be able to provide certification through an accredited organization and up to date vaccination records*

Volunteer: Mentor a new mom with Journey Beside Mothers

Would you like to help young mothers by sharing your journey through motherhood? Journey Beside Mothers (JBM) is responding to a need in our community to support mothers of children, newborn through preschool-aged, who need the support families have traditionally been able to give. Volunteers will be matched according to the mother’s needs, with a weekly minimum time commitment of 1 hour and up to 4 hours. As a mentor, you will offer support to new moms.

Mentors can assist with caring for the infant or engage with older children while the mom takes care of other responsibilities. A mentor can accompany moms to stores, playgrounds, doctors’ appointments, walks,  run errands, or help with light housework.  A mentor will help the moms grow and cheer them on as they take on this new role. Mentors can become a friend to talk to, someone to help with meal plans, meet for coffee, or even go for a walk in the park!  Building a relationship of support is the primary goal.

There is an initial 1-hour orientation for new volunteers, followed by a monthly 1-hour training for all volunteers.
Not interested in mentoring? Help is also needed on the activity committee, special event committee, preparing food for get-togethers and child care during meetings.

Volunteer: Care & Comfort Crew

This role is centered around something simple but meaningful: being there for our guests. Our families are walking through long, often overwhelming days at the hospital, and coming back to a warm, welcoming space (and a kind, helpful person) can make all the difference.

Care & Comfort Crew volunteers are that presence. Greeting guests, helping answer questions, light cleaning or cooking, lending a hand where needed, and just creating a sense of calm and care throughout the home. It’s less about big tasks and more about being there, whenever they need someone.

Shifts are 4 hours (8am–12pm or 12pm–4pm), Monday–Friday, and we’re hoping for a weekly or bi-monthly commitment. If you’re interested in serving but need a small adjustment to one of these timeframes, we still encourage you to apply — we’re happy to explore whether a consistent alternative can work.

All Care and Comfort Crew volunteers are required to attend an orientation and training prior to their first shift.

Volunteer: BBBS - Big Couple - Youth Mentoring (Whitley Co.)

Mentor a child in your community today! With Big Brothers Big Sisters, a community-based Big Couple which involves two adult volunteers in a committed relationship that are typically spouses or long-term partners. This program requires interested participants to undergo an interview with our trained staff so we can get to know you and match you with the best youth! You will be matched based on shared histories and common interests. Once matched, you will meet with your "little' twice a month, doing whatever it is you enjoy doing together.

This can include going out to eat, going to the park, playing sports, arts and crafts, gardening, games, and more. Mentorship is a powerful, proven way to help young people stay on a positive path—reducing the likelihood of risky behaviors like drug use and involvement in the justice system. It also builds self-confidence and encourages stronger, healthier relationships. We have hundreds of children on our waitlist right now hoping to be matched!

Volunteer: Provide a Meal

At Just Neighbors, some of our most powerful moments happen around the dinner table. For families in the middle of a crisis, a home-cooked meal is more than just nourishment—it’s a reminder that they are cared for and part of a community.

We are looking for individuals, families, or groups to provide a "Taste of Home" for our shelter guests.

The Opportunity:

Prepare a Feast: Bring a single meal or sign up for a recurring date. Whether it’s your famous lasagna or a simple backyard BBQ, your cooking makes a difference.

Share the Table: We don’t just want you to "drop and go." We invite you to sit down, grab a plate, and enjoy the meal alongside our families.

Foster Fellowship: Use this time to swap stories, offer encouragement, and provide the human connection our guests crave as they work toward self-sufficiency.

Whether you’re a solo home cook or a corporate team looking to give back, there is always a seat at our table for you.

Volunteer: Assist with Room Readiness

For a family in crisis, the first night at Just Neighbors is the first time they can finally breathe. We believe every family deserves to walk into a space that feels like a fresh start—clean, cozy, and prepared with love.

Because the need in our community is so high, we often transition new families into rooms within just 12 hours of a move-out. We are looking for Room Adoption Volunteers to help us make this quick turnaround possible.

As a volunteer, you’ll "reset" a private room by cleaning, touching up paint, and ensuring safety features like outlet plugs are ready. You’ll then style the room with new bedding, towels, and hygiene kits so the next family feels truly welcomed.

Bonus: Groups or individuals who donate the new bedding and hygiene items help our resources go even further!

Will you help us provide a soft landing for a family in need?

Volunteer: Greenway Rangers - Sidepath Trails

Hey, want to be part of something awesome? The City of Fort Wayne Greenways and Trails team is on the lookout for folks to join as Greenway Rangers and help keep our sidepath trails in top shape.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, a sidepath is just a fancy name for a two-way trail that runs right along the road-think bikes, joggers, and dog-walkers all sharing the lane.

Here’s what you’d be doing as a Greenway Ranger:

- Patrol your own little stretch of trail (half a mile to a mile) once a week from April through October. Winter          patrols? Totally your call.

- Notice anything weird—like graffiti, fallen branches, or cracks in the path? Give the Program Manager a quick

  shout.

- Track your patrol hours each month. Nothing tricky, promise.

- Pick up litter, clear away small branches, sweep up debris—just the easy stuff. If it’s something bigger, let the

Program Manager know and they’ll handle it.

Featured Sidepath Trail Openings:

     - 6-Mile Creek Trail - S. Anthony Boulevard to Fellowship Missionary Church

     - Homestead Road Trail - Liberty Mills Road to Aboite Elementary

     - Hanna Street Trail - Multiple sections available spring 2026 - Berry Street to Tillman Park

     - St. Joe Center Rd Trail - Arlington Parkway to Wheelock Road

     - St. Marys Pathway - Taylor Street Bridge to Carlton Avenue

This volunteer position is open to anyone 18 years or older. Families or individuals under 18 should contact Rick Zolman at Greenways@CityofFortWayne.org to discuss opportunities.
